Special Horse in the News

The American Morgan Horse Association named PATH Intl. Center Member Rose of Sharon Equestrian School's horse Merlin the Therapy Horse of the Year for 2011. He was then awarded the Maryland Horse Industry Board "Touch of Class" award for May 2012. Here is a letter from Joan Twining, founder and executive director of ROSES.

Dear Friends of ROSES!

Some of you may already know that Merlin, ROSES' first resident horse, was named the American Morgan Horse Association's Therapy Horse of the Year for 2011.  Because of that award, he was profiled and 'interviewed' earlier this year by the Mary Gail Hare of the Baltimore Sun and two local television reporters; Sherrie Johnson (ABC 2) and Joel Smith (Fox 45). He was proud, but humble during all the attention. Things settled down and we thought that was that...

Signed by the Governor!

Well, imagine our surprise when the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB) called to say that they had been watching Merlin through the media and had decided to honor him with their "Touch of Class" award for May 2012! Because of his age, they knew he would not be able to travel to receive his award, so they sent a delegation to him!

What is the Secret to His Success?

Prior to their arrival, they interviewed me on his behalf to obtain a little background information. Feeling like I may have never done him justice speaking on his behalf, I decided to go right to the horse's mouth, if you will. One day, while working in the barn, I asked Merlin what he thought was the secret to his longevity...what follows is the non-verbal transfer of information I received in a way the that (fellow horse-lovers may understand) can sometimes happen!

Words of Wisdom We Can All Use!

1. Love: Merlin believes he is in a place surrounded by people and other creatures for whom he has great affection and who love and respect him in return.
2. Purpose: Merlin believes that having a purpose you believe in is paramount to making your life feel meaningful. And when you believe you matter, you show up, everyday, God willing.
3. Ability and Flexibility: Merlin doesn't believe in defining himself by what he can no longer do, but rather by what he has yet to accomplish. And he is willing to step out of his comfort zone to learn what that might be...
I guess you can tell that I'm kind of crazy about this horse. He is Rose of Sharon's "foundation gelding" if you will, being the first horse donated to the program.
With the kindest regards,
Joanie & the ponies!
