Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center (Riverwood) seeks an enthusiastic, energetic, passionate, and experienced Executive Director to provide visionary leadership to Riverwood, its staff, board and volunteers. Riverwood provides quality, professional equine assisted activities and farm-based learning opportunities for both children and adults with disabilities. Our vision is to facilitate healing, acceptance and growth for those with disabilities through a partnership with equines and the natural world.

Overview:

Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center (https://www.riverwoodtrc.org/) is a medium size nonprofit with annual expenses of $500K. The staff of 10 employees (5FT and 5PT) provide Therapeutic Riding, Equine Assisted Mental Health and Community Based Learning programming for seventy students each week. Daily programming is supported by more than 80 volunteers weekly. We cherish our herd of 11 working horses and 2 retired horses. The Executive Director is responsible for the oversight of the organization’s administration, strategic planning, financial management, fundraising development and community outreach. The Executive Director demonstrates independent judgment and discretion in all program matters. They are accountable for maintaining a Premier Accreditation status with PATH Intl. At all times, they maintain a cooperative relationship with all staff, volunteers and participants and farm owners.

Equine assisted services help to improve muscle tone, balance, posture, coordination and motor development as well as emotional well-being. Founded in 1995, Riverwood is a 501 (c)(3) charitable corporation serving 120 individuals weekly. We are a PATH Intl. (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International) Premier Accredited center with nationally certified instructors. Riverwood is located among 53 acres in Tobaccoville, NC and serves Forsyth, Yadkin, Stokes, Surry and Davie Counties.

Our Riverwood Valued Based Programs

Riverwood’s PATH Intl. certified instructors offer children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to experience riding as well as stable management and basic horse care. At certain times of the year, we offer able bodied riding for volunteers, siblings and the general public.

Scope of Executive Director’s Responsibility:

  • Operates under limited supervision with latitude for independent judgment and actions on routine matters.
  • Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for developing a highly effective staff team
  • Responsible for creating an environment that recognizes and supports the values of quality, accountability and professional growth.
  • Responsible for the continuing education necessary for the ongoing professional development of Riverwood’s staff, including certification of instructors
  • Responsible for hiring, evaluations, and disciplinary actions of managers and final approval of new staff hires
  • Support the Development Director in reaching the organization’s annual fund development goals.
  • Support the Program Director in the oversight of instructional programs to ensure quality.
  • Oversight of the Business Manager in their daily duties.
  • Responsible for the organization’s financial and business records and contracts.
  • Responsible for the general health and quality of life of the horses.
  • Oversees and has final approval of Horse selection to include both donated and purchased horses
  • Monthly monitoring of operating budgets to include monthly forecasts/financial reports, and cost control practices;
  • Develop long and short-term fiscal policies in conjunction with appropriate Board committees; ensure legal compliance;
  • Responsible for monthly reports to the Board regarding programming and its impact on the community.
  • Responsible for the organization’s annual budgeting process and gaining an approved budget from the Board by the end of October.
  • Serves as a non-voting staff Representative to Board member
  • Responsible for implementing Board directives and policies in a timely manner.
  • Assists the Board President and committees to identify, coordinate and execute board development and policies.
  • Execute approved strategic plans and provide timely progress reports and benchmarks of success to the Board of Directors
  • Riverwood’s Ambassador in the community

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • College degree or higher educational degree
  • Experience in operations management of non-profit or small business
  • Demonstrated ability with budget development, financial management and statistical analysis
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability in managing the welfare of horses
  • Demonstrated ability with advocating for people with disabilities
  • Demonstrated ability in launching new partnership and programs

  • Experience in farm management and animal care is beneficial
