Melwood Recreation Center is a beautiful 108-acre facility located in rural Charles County, Maryland.  The Center offers lodge-style cabins, challenge courses, nearly 10 miles of hiking and riding trails and aquatic and equestrian facilities.  Here, Melwood provides experiential learning and therapeutic recreation opportunities to individuals of all ages and abilities: summer campers, veterans, active-duty military, schools, non-profit organization, corporations and community groups.  We offer a variety of equestrian and challenge course activities that can be tailored to the meet the needs of any group.  

About this Leadership Position:
The Program Director, Experiential Learning and Therapeutic Recreation is responsible for the growth, oversight and daily operation of the Equestrian and Challenge Courses programs at Melwood’s Recreation Center.  These programs are offered both as stand-alone services and at times in conjunction with other Melwood programming.  

Equestrian Program includes: General Horsemanship & Therapeutic Lessons, Unified Teams, Equine-assisted Learning, and Hippotherapy.

The Challenge Courses Program includes: Low Ropes, High Ropes, NESSIE (high ropes challenge course individual belayed element) and facilitated Classroom Teambuilding Retreat.

The incumbent is principally responsible for designing and delivering dynamic and cost-effective programs and activities that focus on quality, person-centered services in an inclusive environment.

Professional Experience / Qualifications
•    Seven years’ experience providing equestrian-based programs for individuals with differing abilities and behavioral issues is highly desired.
•    Must be either:

o     a PATH Intl. certified therapeutic riding instructor, or
o    certified in equine-assisted learning by either PATH International or EAGALA, and
o    if not certified in both, must be willing to gain the other certification within one-year of hire.

•    Must possess, or must obtain during the first year of employment, the following certifications:

o    Adventure/Challenge Courses Instruction,
o    First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)  
o    Behavior Intervention Certification

•    Must be able to effectively develop partnerships with other non-profits and service providers to grow the program’s reach.
•    Must be able to identify and develop partnerships with providers in order to launch hippotherapy.
•    Must be able to select, schedule and manage staff.
•    A Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain DOT physical are required.

Director of Equine Activity - AZ

Job Description and Duties:  The Director of Equine Activity is a professional who works with horses and helps patients and customers accept horses as a means of therapy and comfort.  They encourage participants to communicate with horses and teach them simple tasks using eye contact and body language.  The Director teaches riding lessons to patients and participants.  The Director schedules therapy sessions, workshops, and basic horse training.

This individual is responsible for and in conjunction with the Farm Director:  planning, development, administration, grown and evaluation of the Equestrian program.  Sound judgment, stability, maturity, and experience in the Equestrian programs are preferred.  Duties include horse care, hiring, training, and supervision of staff, program development, supervision of horseback riding lessons and trail rides.  Assist with all aspects of summer camp and retreats, including hosting groups.

In addition to working with the horses, the Director performs the role of trained counselor.  They may assess new students, determine those student’s needs and implement therapy and training sessions based on those needs.  There will be a need for marketing the ranch/functions.  Other duties may include  scheduling functions, set-up summer camp, riding lessons, fundraisers, certification, and training programs.  They work with the patients on a regular basis, from the time they join the facility through their discharge.  Because of the disabilities exhibited by many of the patients, the Director must possess patience, compassion, and understanding.

Candidates should be certified, comfortable with HIPPA rules and processing insurance claims.  This is a newly formed non-profit with great potential for the community.

The Director of Equine Activity will acquire and board two to five horses at a time.  This position would be full-time with a benefit package.  Local experience preferred.

Education and Requirements:  You should have a Bachelor’s Degree in an animal science or counseling-related field, or certification through EAGALA.  Some employers require membership in Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH)
